30 Nov 2012 13:58 ET * Flaherty says fire sale is not in taxpayers' interest * Ontario official says stake will be sold for best return * Canada and Ontario became GM shareholders in 2009 bailout VICTORIA, British Columbia, Nov 30 (Reuters) - Canada has no immediate plans to sell its shares in General Motors Co, Finance Minister Jim Flaherty said on Friday, and the province of Ontario said it would offload its GM stake only when it can get the "best possible return" for taxpayers. Both were responding to a report in the Globe and Mail newspaper on Friday that said Ontario's finance minister believed it was time for both the Canadian and Ontario governments to shed their GM shares. "I don't think at this time it would be in our interest, the taxpayers of Canada, to engage in a fire sale of those shares, and I don't intend to do it right now," Flaherty told reporters in Victoria, British Columbia. The two governments became shareholders of GM in 2009 when they contributed a combined C$10.8 billion ($10.89 billion) to a bailout to keep GM afloat. The U.S. government provided about US$50 billion. Canada and Ontario's combined 9 percent stake, made up of around 140 million common shares and 16.1 million preferred shares, was worth C$3.5 billion at the end of September. "I was in the private sector for many years. I wasn't in the habit of selling stocks at half their price," Flaherty said. Separately, Aly Vitunski, a spokeswoman for Ontario Finance Minister Dwight Duncan, said Ontario will sell its GM shares "when the time and circumstances are appropriate and in a judicious manner to ensure that Ontarians receive the best possible return on their investment". The Globe had quoted Duncan as saying that "the sooner we're out of the stock the better". Selling the stock would give an immediate boost to the coffers of both governments, which are both trying to reduce their budget deficits, the newspaper said. That is because the book value of the shares on the government's books is much lower than the current share price. Flaherty said he has had "continuing discussions" on the subject of the GM stake with U.S. Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner.

Ethanol and Food Prices

In a recent article, ethanol producers (i.e. the people who make money producing and selling ethanol) lashed out at claims that their heavily subsidized industry inflates food prices.

This would be laughable if it wasn't so serious; 1) Biofuels take more energy to produce than they yield, so they increase rather than decrease fossil fuel consumption. If this were not true, farmers & producers would be energy self-sufficient and there wouldn't be any need for subsidies. 2) Food costs are linked to energy costs & will rise as long as we keep burning gallons of diesel to produce litters of ethanol. 3) The rise in food prices, regardless of the reason, is tiny compared to the rise in taxes & energy prices required to pay for all the renewable energy schemes that do NOT reduce CO2 emissions but Do make a small number of people extremely rich.

Wake up people! Your economy is sinking under the weight of false environmentalism. Poverty-stricken people in third world countries are hungry because of their own corrupt governments, not because of a lack of fodd in the world. If you really want to do something good for the world, divert some your billions from the over-fed environmentalists to the poor kids in the world who really need it.

Europe Forces Ocean Going Ships To Use "Cleaner" Fuels

Supporters feel they are immune from the costs of these unnecessary requirements. Those people think that someone else will pay for everything, but it is YOU & THEY who will pay, through higher taxes and higher prices. Change the headline to "Food And Fuel Prices Skyrocket Due To Stricter Fuel Rules" and think about how this affects you and your family. The whole European economy is sinking under the weight of UNNECESSARY environmental regulations. Yes, UNNECESSARY. The little bit of sulphur these ships emit out in the vast oceans doesn't hurt anything. Besides that, there isn't even enough diesel fuel around to meet the planned regulation!! In a recent article in The Guardian, George Monbiot admits the Peak Oil theory is WRONG. The Peak-Oil theory was based on either ignorance or lies. Hubbert simply divided 'proved reserves' by annual consumption, but he didn't tell you that 'proved reserves' are just a small fraction of the oil in the ground. In fact, 'proved reserves', production and consumption are all higher than they've ever been, and new technology and new discoveries continue to bring more and more oil into production; you can confirm this easily on the U.S. Dept of Energy website or any other credible source. This has been known for 30 years, yet fools like GM continue to spout the "Peak Oil" drivel. If oil supplies ever do start to shrink and are unable to meet demand, the price will rise and other forms of energy will become more competitive and oil will slowly be replaced. If oil dies it will go down with a whimper, not a bang, and there won't be any crisis at all. More Stupid Laws

The California Air Resources Board has done some dumb things in the past, but this time they've outshone even their own pace-setting idiocy. They have passed a law that requires 12% of new vehicles produced and delivered for sale in California in 2012 be low emission vehicles!! Nothing is said about who is going to buy them, mind you, or what the manufacturers will do with them when nobody does buy them; only that the manufacturers produce them.

The fact that less than 1% of vehicles sold in California today are low emission vehicles seems lost on these self-aggrandized dictatorial bureaucrats. These lost-in-their-own-fantasyland pencil pushers don't seem to understand the meaning of "consumer demand", or in this case lack of it. No one outside of a few egotistical movie stars wants these cars. Someone should explain the old wisdom, "you can lead a horse to water but you can't make it drink" to them.

What will the California Air Resources Board do when people don't buy the cars the California Air Resources Board wants them to? What will they do to the manufacturers who will lose millions of dollars conforming to their lunatic legislation? Will they punish the people too? Well, in reality they already are, because these millions of dollars will come from government grants (taxpayers dollars) and higher prices for conventional vehicles. This is worse than communism!!

Aside from the loss of freedom that every American faces through this legislation, one of the scariest-although not unexpected-facts is that the legislation won't actually reduce overall emissions! This law won't achieve the goals it is meant to because the legislators can't see through the false science that has been foisted on them but the eco-terrorists.

That's right, bio-fuels and hydrogen fuel cells use more hydrocarbons, not less, than conventional gasoline and diesel engines. Electric cars get their power from, guess where, coal fired power plants. As with all government legislated economic plans, this one misses the boat completely, failing to achieve it's stated goals and causing unending economic harm to the people it purports to help. It is sad to see a giant die: America was once the bastion of liberty and free enterprise, the economic power house of the world, but she is dying a pitiful death. You might want to turn away from her, but turn your eyes on your own nation, and make your voice heard before we suffer the same fate.

Ethanol, Whether You Want it Or Not, You Will Pay For It!

Bio-fuels are in the news again. Here are two concrete facts that disprove the ethanol claims;

1) If ethanol yielded more energy than is required to produce it, everyone would be doing it & getting rich in the process. Obviously if one BTU of  energy produced ethanol with two BTU of energy, the chain reaction would see the world swimming in cheap energy before you could say Barack Obama 3 times. Even if the increase was very small, the end result would be the same.

2) Ethanol usage is forced on us and production is subsidized by governments all over the world. If ethanol is cheaper than gasoline, why does it have to be subsidized & why are laws required to force us to use it? You can see that if ethanol production was really competitive with gasoline, production plants would be springing up all over the place. In fact, oil producers PAY taxes and ethanol producers RECEIVE tax dollars.

Using common sense is a far more effective way to gauge the world than relying on every self-serving "scientific study" that rolls across the landscape.

US Economy to Follow Greece Down The Toilet

Proof positive that environmentalism (hmmm, "mentalism"!?) has gone completely whacko. Well intentioned but misguided environmentalist pressure stopped the Keystone pipeline & cost the comatose US economy tens of thousands of jobs. Would they rather fight wars & spill blood than use oil from the Canadian oilsands? It appears so. And just what is so terribly wrong with oil from Alberta's oilsands? They claim it has a larger "carbon footprint"; that CO2 emissions are higher than for conventional oil. Never mind the Naval Taskforce, hundreds of jets & thousands of tanks & trucks it takes to wage war in the Middle East. What about the emissions from them? Oilsands oil is dirty! War is what-Clean?? Gimme a break!

What about the millions of litters of diesel fuel the huge ships burn to bring the oil across the ocean, or the arabs who are getting so rich they're choking on American dollars. All in all, oil from Alberta looks pretty darn good if you ask me! Don't forget, the Global Warming theory is falling apart faster than Bill Clinton's alibi, so what does a little CO2 matter anyway? They aren't environmentalists, they're just hypocrites!
